How to Prepare Your Furnace for the Winter

The cold weather has arrived! One of the most important things you can do for your home, and for your family, is make sure the furnace and is safe and operational. You don’t want to find yourself freezing when the temperatures drop. A lot can happen over those warmer months, so to ensure the furnace works when you need it, follow these tips.

What You Can Do:

Calling in an HVAC professional to do an inspection is always a great idea, but performing regular furnace maintenance will help keep your furnace running smoothly. Maintenance should include:

  • Changing your furnace filters regularly. Some professionals suggest changing them every three months while others tell you to change them monthly. Take a look at your filter each month, and see if it needs changing. If it looks clean, change it at the three-month mark.
  • Buy in bulk! Make sure to stock up on filters during the warmer months when they are on sale. This way, you won’t be running out to grab a new one when the cold air hits, and you’ll save money, too.
  • Clean up around your furnace. Get rid of any items that may be stored near the furnace, especially those items which could catch fire. Look at the ducts and return vents, too. If there are any items sitting on or in front of them, remove those items to keep the air flowing smoothly.
  • For those with a gas furnace, make sure to contact your gas company to have them refill the gas before you need the heat. Gas prices will be lower in the warm months than during the winter months.
  • If you have any hot water radiators, make sure to bleed the valves. Just open the valves slightly and then close them again when you see water begin to appear.

Following these steps will have your hope toasty warm when the cold temperatures hit! Don’t be left out in the cold, get your furnace ready now. For furnace maintenance services, contact Baltimore Heating and Cooling today at 410-242-7177.
