How to Cool Down Your Energy Bill This Summer

The summer months can get pretty hot and muggy, which typically causes people to turn up the AC. Because of this, most households notice a significant increase in the cost of their energy bills during the summer. With energy costs on the rise, it is important to take as many steps as possible to reduce the energy costs without suffering through the heat, so here are a few tips to help you get started saving energy, while staying cool.

Regular Maintenance
One of the best things you can do to save on energy is to have your air conditioning system routinely maintenance. A good working air conditioner will work more efficiently than a poorly working one. It is also essential that you change the filters once a month to prevent the air conditioner from working harder than it should.

Keep the Blinds Closed
Direct sunlight into the house can drastically increase the temperature, which causes the AC to kick on more frequently. Keeping the curtains and blinds closed will help to block the sunlight during the day, which in turn will keep your home cooler without using the air conditioner as much.

Steady Temperature
Find the temperature you are the most comfortable at and keep the AC set at that temperature. Changing it frequently will cause it to kick on and off more than it needs to, which increases the energy use.

Don’t Use the Oven
If at all possible, avoid using the oven, because the heat from the oven will cause the AC to kick on. Instead use the stovetop or even better, grill out or use a slow cooker to prepare your meals, this will allow you to save energy and not have to fuss over cooking in the heat.

On days with low humidity, consider using a fan instead of the air conditioner. If you have ceiling fans, using them in combination with the ac may also help to prevent the air conditioning system from kicking on when it’s not needed.
