3 Ways to Extend the Life of Your Air Conditioner

AC Contractor

Air conditioners are like just about everything else. The more you care for it and maintain it, the longer it will last and the better it will work. Unfortunately, sometimes homeowners think that no news is good news from the air conditioner, but without proper and regular maintenance, air conditioners will slowly become less efficient and will fail prematurely. Fortunately, there are a few easy things that homeowners can do to extend the life of their air conditioner.

Unplug the air conditioner from the wall outside. With a garden hose and spray nozzle, hose down the fans. This will help to clean the inside of the condenser. Next, spray the outside of the condenser on all four sides. You will notice dirt and debris coming out of the bottom. It is okay to use the jet feature of the nozzle, just stay away from using extreme pressure such as from a power washer, as this can damage the unit.

Use a programmable thermostat. The more you use the air conditioner, the faster it wears. Using a thermostat with a programmable feature allows for your home to be slightly warmer during times when you are not at home, and you can program it in such a way that the air conditioner kicks on before you arrive home from. There are more expensive thermostat control options that work with the internet, allowing you to make changes in your home’s climate from a computer or mobile device.

Hire a heating and cooling expert to provide annual service. Professionals can detect minor problems and take corrective action, often avoiding the need for very costly repairs. These experts can determine the amount of coolant in the system and add more if necessary, which greatly reduces the likelihood of the air conditioner blowing warm air due to a coolant problem.

Air conditioners that are well maintained can last more than a decade, sometimes two! Incurring minor expenses annually for tune-ups and diagnostics is sure to increase the life expectancy of your air conditioner.
